Help! Flies in my composting bin...?

What can I do to get rid of them, or at least keep the numbers down? They are quite small, with white rounded wings & there are hundreds of them in my compost bin. When I lift up the lid to put some vegetable peelings in, they all fly out in my face. It is horrid. Please help!
