What kind of camera to buy?

I would like to buy a new camera but I have no clue about them. I don't want a regular digital camera. I want one of the ones with the good zoom and better quality. I want this camera to take pictures of the sky and nature. I have no clue when it comes to camera lingo. What does optical mean?
